My name is Gyuwon Song and I was attending medical school overseas when my mother had a stroke. Fortunately, my mother survived the stroke, however, it took away most of her ability to be independent and required round-the-clock care. Without question, the rest of my family put our lives on pause and dedicated our time to tend to my mother’s recovery. Kickstraps was born from a idea which began while being a full time caretaker for my mother. Between her therapy sessions and other special needs, the need to quickly take her shoes on and off became a overwhelming daily repetitive task. With such limited durable footwear equipped with Velcro fastening straps, I wanted to create a universal footwear fastening strap system which can be installed to any footwear. In other words, ability to add a fastening component to any footwear. After many challenges, and product testing, a fully functional kickstraps system was born.
